The nature of the clutch coupling design necessitates the use of an internal bearing. For this reason, conventionally coupling shafts(Fig. 1) must be closely aligned to avoid overstressing the bearings of the clutch and of the coupled shafts. Maximum axial misalignment of .002" T.I.R. is recommended for this type of mounting. Fig. 2 shows a recommended coupling arrangement which utilizes the bearing inside the clutch and minimizes the requirement for precision alignment of shafts. In this arrangement one shaft is fixed between a pair of support bearings. The coupling is set screwed to that shaft. The other shaft is supported by only one external bearing and the bearing inside the clutch itself. Using this method, greater misalignments between the center lines of the two shafts can be tolerated. The following formula will serve as a guide for calculating maximum permissible misalignment. M = .004L (max) Where, L is length in inches (see Fig. 2) M is the misalignment in inches.

Automatic freewheel clutches are used in conjunction with a double engagement gear coupling. They can be produced in close coupled or spacer design to suit. The clutch coupling must be stopped to check internal lube oil on a scheduled basis. If space is available, the recommended choice is a Marland CECON clutch with full oil system for non-stop operation. The OCC Series clutch couplings are spring wrapped unidirectional or overrunning clutches designed for coupling two in-line shafts. They are noted for their high torque transmission capacity in input and output drums, enveloped by a helical spring. When the input is rotated in the self-energizing direction, the spring couples the output to the input with high transmission torque capability. In the reverse direction, the output decouples, experiencing only a slight drag.
